The VBA Board of Governors created two special task forces in spring 2024 to study important issues influencing law practice in the commonwealth.

The Task Force on Artificial Intelligence was charged with exploring the impact of AI on the legal profession and positioning the VBA at the forefront of legal education and programming on AI in Virginia. The group is building on a project developed by the VBA's Committee on Small-Firm and Solo Practice: the VBA Model AI Policy for Law Firms. The group sponsors a series of educational webinars on AI, and AI is a frequent topic in CLE programming at VBA statewide meetings.

The Task Force on the Future of Bar Membership in Virginia was created to study the decline in potential lawyers taking the bar examination in Virginia and the lack of lawyers in many areas of Virginia, predominately rural portions of the state. The concerns with these "legal deserts" include the lack of access of justice and the problems with having to travel far distances to see legal counsel. These issues also are the subject of an effort by the Virginia State Bar called the "Entry, Growth and Distribution of Virginia Attorneys Study Committee." The VBA and VSB groups are working cooperatively and in tandem.
